It’s hard to believe the existence of a pre-teen who is not obsessed with the video game Minecraft. This video game has been a cultural phenomenon for over a decade, becoming a lifelong favourite for kids everywhere. Video game adaptations rarely translate well to the big screen. Still, A Minecraft Movie has leaped as the highly anticipated movie, exploding in cinemas and featuring not just one, but two of your favourite characters.

Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda, Jumanji) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman). Usually, in films like Journey to the Centre of the Earth and The Mummies (the animated one), the adventure unfolds in an underground world filled with hidden wonders. However, Minecraft’s Overworld flips this concept, offering an expansive, open landscape brimming with endless possibilities above ground.

The story follows four misfits: Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) — who are suddenly transported from their ordinary lives into the Overworld and joined by Steve (Jack Black). Their only option is to rely on their resources and teamwork to find their way home.

Garrett is a once-promising champion past his prime; Natalie has to look after her brother Henry, a creative kid bullied at school, while Steve is stuck there for ages. There’s a villain, Malgosha — a witch who is not truly evil but completely unhinged.

Imagine a crossover between Darkseid and Mumm-Ra from Thundercats, but without a hint of menace. Unlike Overworld, the Nether lacks water, has a harsh environment, and is filled with dangerous mobs. The battle revolves around a powerful Orb —whoever possesses it holds ultimate control over everything.

Directed by Jared Hess, and co-produced by Jason Momoa, A Minecraft Movie will remind you very much of Jumanji and other adventure/survival-based games. Like Jumanji, it throws players into a vast, unpredictable world where they must navigate challenges to survive. It’s difficult to determine who between Black and Momoa was better, but both are at their best. The film, which has action that reminds one of animated films, is packed with iconic game elements like Villagers, Creepers, Zombies, and more.

A Minecraft Movie is a fast-paced, family-friendly flick that runs just under two hours, making it accessible for all ages. It captures the spirit of the beloved video game while bringing the iconic blocky world to life.

The movie reminds us why it is necessary to work together to overcome challenges and why thinking outside the box can help solve problems more quickly.
